The Origin of Father's Day
The story dates back to the early twentieth century, in Washington, United States. While listening to the Mother's Day sermon, in Sonora Smart Dodd, daughter of a war veteran, was born the idea that there should be a day to recognize the work of parents. His had been widowed, so he cared for and raised only his six children.
Thus, in 1910 he proposed that a day be created to commemorate all the parents of the country and suggested that the date be June 5, which coincided with his father's birthday.
At that time his idea was not accepted, however, in 1924, Calvin Coolidge, 30th president of the United States, decided to support it and officially declared it a national celebration. Years later, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation that established the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.
